Get Outside! Fitness Programs at Shelby Farms Park offer a chance for the whole family to get fit, stay active and enjoy being in nature! This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

Classes are subject to occasional time or date change or cancellation. Classes may be cancelled due to severe weather.  Please check the calendar for most updated schedule.

Nature Boot Camp

Strength training and obstacle course
This group fitness class promotes hard work, fat loss, and team effort. Beginner exercisers are welcome to attend this class, but be prepared to work hard! The class is designed to push exercisers farther than they can push themselves alone. The class uses bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, squats, lunges, and burpees interspersed with running and competitive stations. In addition, the instructor uses medicine balls, resistance bands and bars to intensify the workout. Participants work in small groups to complete each station.

Better Body Boot Camp

Bodyweight strength training

This group fitness class is 60 minutes of bodyweight strength training and high impact exercises. The instructor pushes the participants by incorporating full-body exercises in addition to muscle isolation exercises. Therefore, this class is not designed for first-time exercisers. Be ready to work hard, sweat, and push through this challenging training session. Expect to “come in strong and crawl out stronger.”

Family Zumba

Dance based fitness class

Zumba® Fitness is a Latin Dance based fitness movement. By incorporating rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Bhangra and other world music, everyone is welcomed and united through dance, culture and fitness. You don't need to have rhythm or be a dancer to participate.  Just have a love for fun and burning calories.

When: Every other Saturday at 3:30 pm

Strength + Balance

Strength training and basic movements

This fitness class is designed for our Wise Trek population (ages 50+) and for people with type 2 diabetes. Participants will be working with light hand weights, resistance bands and small inflatable balls. Classes start with a brief warm-up followed by strength training and light cardio, and finish with a cool down and stretch. Chairs are available throughout the workout if you need a short break

Adults + Kids Yoga

Basic yoga

An all-levels class that will move, groove, and flow to upbeat music. With a different sequence and peak pose every week, this class will stay interesting and challenging as we move and breathe our way to happier hearts and more relaxed bodies.

Learn how to advance your practice without taking yourself or your practice too seriously. This is a perfect class for people new to yoga, or students who want to re-connect with their fundamentals. Emphasis is placed on a strong foundation practice that you can build on for years to come. Basic postures, as well as transitions, like step-throughs and chatturangas, will be covered in depth.

Prenatal Yoga

Basic yoga

This group fitness class is designed for expectant mothers.  Participants will learn how to safely execute specific yoga poses during their pregnancy.  Join this class to experience the physical and emotional health benefits that prenatal yoga can have.

Kids Dance

Dance classes for kids

This class introduces a structured environment that allows children to use their imagination while learning about their bodies' mobility. We will be dancing, learning about rhythm, playing games, and expressing ourselves through movement by exploring different styles of dance through multiple 6-week sessions. Pick and choose your sessions or join them all!  No prior experience is needed. Experienced dancers also welcome!  

Recommended ages: 6-14 years old

The 6-week sessions will be:
Tap, Hip-Hop, Modern, Ballroom, Ballet, Jazz

Tap Classes
When: Sundays at 3 pm (1 hour classes)
April 23, April 30, May 7, May 14, May 21, May 28
Note: May 21 class is at 2pm

Yurt at the Woodland Discovery Playground

Each student needs to bring:
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.  
  • Tap shoes are welcome, but not required
  • Long hair pulled back
  • Water bottle

Tai Chi

Relieve stress and increase flexibility by participating in Tai Chi classes led by a certified instructor Richard Link, a Senior Trainer at Tai Chi for Health Institute. Tai Chi is an ancient practice that is enjoyable and safe for every fitness level. The slow, meditative movements of Tai Chi increase strength, range of motion and coordination. Classes can be enjoyed either sitting or standing. Comfortable shoes and loose clothing are recommended. Please bring a personal water bottle. This is a great fitness opportunity for our Wise Trek population (ages 50+) and for people with type 2 diabetes.

Lakefront Fitness

Strength training and general conditioning.

This fitness class is a combination of strength training and conditioning designed to increase power, muscular endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and coordination while building muscle and burning fat. Equipment such as medicine balls, resistance bands and weight bars are used to target each participant’s ability. Come experience overall improved fitness while being coached by trainers from NBS Fitness in Memphis.  

When: Tuesdays at 12pm

Mental Fitness: Happiness Wellness Series

During this "mental fitness" workshop you will learn to clear your mind of stress from the work week and get recharged to tackle life's challenges and curve balls with a happy and upbeat attitude. Each week’s session is unique and covers a range of topics like Nature of Stress, Tendencies of the Mind, Meditation, Secrets of Breathing, Overcoming Depression & Anxiety Naturally, Raising Ones Energy, Finding Balance in Life and many more. The sessions combine simple yoga, breathing techniques, meditation and relaxation, and practical wisdom. 

When: Saturdays at 10:45 am 
Where: Yurt (near Woodland Discovery Playground)
Ages 18+ (no prior experience required; experienced practitioners may benefit, too)

Strictly Business Walking Club

Interested in exploring the trails at Shelby Farms Park? There are countless physical activities out there, but walking has the lowest participation rate of them all! It's the most simple change you can make to effectively improve your heart health. Research has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day will change your life! Join the 'Strictly Business' Walking Club to participate in positive, low impact exercise. Bring a family member or friend and join today!

When: Saturdays at 9am (May cancel due to inclement weather)
