Shelby Farms Parkway

Shelby Farms Parkway

Shelby Farms Parkway is a 2.5 mile parkway running from Kirby Parkway at Walnut Grove road to the intersection of Whitten Road and Macon Road. The design consists of a four-lane, median-divided, access controlled parkway.

Update: February 28, 2017 -- TDOT announced that this project is temporarily on hold. Visit the TDOT website for the latest information.

BEnefits to Shelby Farms Park

Shelby Farms Park Conservancy has worked with all parties involved to ensure the Parkway avoids harming the natural and recreational resources of the Park, and that any harm is mitigated.  As a result of our collaboration, Shelby Farms Parkway design now includes:

IMPROVED PEDESTRIAN SAFETY + CIRCULATION

  • More than three miles of new pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian trails
  • Three new tunnels that will allow pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians to travel into and around Shelby Farms Park without crossing traffic

IMPROVED VEHICULAR SAFETY + CIRCULATION

  • Safer Park entrances and exits
  • Commuter and "thru" traffic moved out of center of the Park and over to the western edge (through what are now crop fields)

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTIONS

  • More than 200 acres in the center of the property reclaimed as parkland, programmable for public use
  • Landscaping with native trees and grasses
  • Assurances that the watershed, floodplain and other ecosystems will be protected
  • Assurances that Walnut Grove Road will not be widened, and that the funds will be redirected to provide a green bridge over Walnut Grove Road at Patriot Lake (east) for additional Park access
