With 4,500 acres of parkland and 10.65 miles of urban trail, we rely on thousands of volunteers each year to keep Shelby Farms Park + Shelby Farms Greenline clean, green and safe. Volunteers are at the heart of what we do, and we've got opportunities to fit your schedule and interests.

Whether you're looking for an ongoing commitment or a one-time service project, you can get involved. When you sign up to volunteer, you can select your areas of interest. We'll call on you when a need arises!

Join Our Park Volunteer Program 

Are you passionate about the Park? The Park Volunteer Program offers fun ways to give back to the Park for those interested in an ongoing commitment.  We have a 'job' for everyone, from history buffs to nature lovers.

Playground Monitor

Shelby Farms Park’s Woodland Discovery Playground provides a one-of-kind play experience for children of all ages. Playground Monitors ensure a safe playground environment as well as providing Park information to families as requested. Playground Monitors give a 5 hour per week commitment during spring, summer, and fall. Playground monitors must be at least 16 years of age. 

Interpretive Docent

Passionate about Park history and sharing it with others? Interpretive Docents provide information on Park history, nature, trails, and current/future amenities. Interpretive Docents enjoy giving presentations to school and community groups, and leading Park hikes during special events. Interpretive Docents are scheduled for presentations and tours by appointment only. Interpretive docents must be at least 18 years of age. 

Urban Gardener

Calling master gardeners, arborists, and anyone interested in working with the land! Directed by the Park Horticulturalist, Urban Gardeners assist in ongoing gardening, trail work, and landscaping projects in the Park. Urban Gardeners also oversee occasional volunteer groups completing gardening projects. Urban Gardeners commit to at least 10 hours of service a month and must be at least 16 years of age. 

Membership Docent

Volunteers who enjoy meeting new people and are not shy about engaging others would enjoy volunteering as a Membership Docent. Membership Docents work under the direction of the Membership Manager to meet the goals of the Membership Program. Activities include organizing Member Mixers, ‘Walkabouts’ through the Park to share and explain membership opportunities, and helping to organize membership mailings. Membership docents are commit 2 hours of service a week. 

Special Event Volunteer

Special events are exciting and important component to the operation of the Park. The events are driven through service from committed volunteers who fulfill positions as laid out by the Manager of Events and the Volunteer Coordinator. Special Event Volunteers work 4-5 hour shifts and are able to enjoy the events after volunteering. Special Event Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. 

Trail Scout

Volunteer Trail Scout provides anyone interested in engagement in Shelby Farms Park the opportunity to serve. Targeting students of all ages, scout groups and corporate groups to walk the trails picking up litter, reporting trail conditions or occasionally assisting Rangers with trail maintenance. Hours are flexible with great opportunity to adopt a trail section for minimal but ongoing commitment in the Park. Volunteer application required. Minors under 15 years of age requires an adult for at least a 1:5 ratio.

Park and Recreation Corp (PARC), sponsored by AutoZone

The Volunteer PARC serves as a visible presence in Shelby Farms Park and along park trails to enhance the experience of the Park. These dedicated volunteers walk or ride the trails, answering questions and contacting Park Rangers when necessary. Volunteers represent Shelby Farms Park and the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, but they carry no law enforcement authority above that of a regular citizen. Their influence lies in their knowledge, friendliness and willingness to help others. The PARC will work through the Ranger program to respond to questions and inquiries, monitor trails and natural areas for visitor safety and resource protection, assess timing and types of recreational uses, and alert rangers to situations that require ranger attention. PARC have the option to choose running/hiking, biking, or horseback riding.  During special events, PARC will be asked to participate in park events or other information areas to greet and answer visitor questions.  PARC participants are selected through an application process, and each volunteer must meet the following requirements:

  •  21 years and older and are selected through application process. 
  • PARC volunteers must pass a background check 
  • Commitment to bi-monthly meetings and at least 6 hours per month + 4 park events each calendar year
  • Park Membership is required for PARC volunteers. 
  • Mandatory CPR + First Aid certification and training on park history and the Master Plan will be provided.
